Overview / Comments

Built in 1853, the Thomas F. Hoppin House is a three-story brick Italianate located in the historic East Side neighborhood of College Hill. Hoppin, who was a painter, sculptor, and scion of an East India trade family, selected the site because the former mansion was the childhood home of his wife, Anna Almy Jenkins. During Hoppin’s studies in Europe he met Alpheus C. Morse whom he would bring in as architect for his new home. This would be Morse’s first commission in Providence. After Hoppin’s death in 1873 the family began leasing the property to some very notable clientele, including several governors. The home served as the site of the coruscant reception for President Hayes and earned the nickname, “House of a Thousand Candles.” Multiple restoration and renovation projects began in the early 1980s, including the addition of a second story passage and a Northside stair tower. Throughout much of the 20th century, the Thomas F. Hoppin house has been used as a commercial office space predominately by architectural firms. The interior offices are an amalgamation of modern amenities and historic charm. The impressive center staircase ascends three levels with a carved wood bannister that extends along the moldings. Beautiful fireplaces built with ornate metal and stonework serve as the focal point within several rooms. The offices have been renovated to accommodate 21st century commercial use with updated baths and kitchenettes throughout the building. Enjoy the private grounds surrounded by a brownstone wall. Through the carriage entrance, the two story service wing and carriage house join together to create a lovely courtyard. The second story of the main structure is highlighted by a sculpture of Flora, the Roman goddess of nature, overlooking the grounds on the east side of the building. This incredible property is in the heart of College Hill surrounded by the renowned facilities of both Rhode Island School of Design and Brown University. An abundance of locally owned shops and restaurants occupy nearby Thayer, Wickenden and South Main Streets. The Creative Capital’s host of entertainment and events including Waterfire are just minutes away. Easy interstate access and the Downtown commuter rail allow for easy travel throughout the Northeast corridor. This special offering can serve a variety of residential or commercial uses and its commanding presence along Providence’s Mile of History is sure to make a statement!
